E-commerceBackend & cloudTechnical review

A practical approach to reviewing an online store.

How we would help a retailer understand why its store slows down during busy periods, whether a rebuild is necessary, and which improvements to make first.

The situation

An online store that works well on a quiet day can struggle during a sale or a seasonal peak. Pages take longer to load, checkout slows, and some customers give up before paying. The staff who run the store see the same slowdown in the admin tools they use to manage orders and stock.

At that point a retailer often has to make a large decision with limited information. One option on the table is a full rebuild on a new platform, which is expensive and takes months. The alternative is to find out what is slowing the store down and fix that. Choosing well depends on evidence about where the time is going, and that is what a review is for.

What we would investigate

A review looks at how the store behaves under customer traffic, not only at how the code is written.

  • Behaviour under load

Load testing sends simulated customer traffic at a copy of the store to see which pages and actions slow down first, and at what level of traffic.

  • Where the time goes

For the slow pages, we trace each request to find whether the time is spent retrieving information from the database, calling other services, or building the page itself.

  • The checkout path

Placing an order is checked step by step, including what happens when a payment or a stock update fails, so that any change we recommend keeps orders correct as well as fast.

  • How changes are released

We look at how the team tests and deploys changes today, because the safest improvement plan depends on how easily each change can be checked and reversed.

How we would prioritise improvements

  1. Prioritise the findings

Every finding is written up with its evidence, its likely effect on customers and staff, and the effort to address it. The list is ordered by business impact, so the retailer can see which few items account for most of the slowdown and which can wait.

  2. Recommend a direction

The report sets out whether the problems can be addressed within the existing store or whether a rebuild is justified, with the reasoning either way. A rebuild is a legitimate answer when the evidence supports it, and the retailer makes the decision.

  3. Address the causes of slow performance

Where the retailer asks us to make the changes, typical work includes reducing the time spent retrieving information from the database, reusing suitable data so pages do not repeat unnecessary work, and moving tasks that do not need an immediate answer out of the customer's request. Each change is measured under load before and after, and tests are added to check that existing behaviour is preserved.

  4. Document the next steps

The remaining findings become a plan the retailer's own team can work through, with each item described in enough detail to be picked up without us.

Intended outcomes

What a successful engagement would deliver, and how each outcome would be measured.

  • A clear decision on rebuild versus repair

Assessed by whether the retailer has a written recommendation, with evidence, that they can take to their leadership.

  • Faster pages under peak traffic

Measured as server response time for the slowest pages and the checkout steps, under the same simulated traffic level before and after each change.

  • A plan the team can carry on with

Judged by whether the in-house team is completing items from the plan on their own after the engagement ends.
